Shift Operator

To supervise and operate the generating plant and to undertake designated planned and unplanned maintenance on the plant and equipment.  The Shift Operator is part of a team comprising a Shift Engineer and a Control Room Operator working 24 hour rotating shifts responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the generation plant.  Operation and maintenance duties are diverse and are split between the generating stations.  The post holder requires a good general mechanical aptitude and will have a competent knowledge of station systems to ensure their safety and the safety of other staff on the site.  Due to varying levels of power import and associated variations in patterns of local generation, shift workload may vary throughout the year.  Flexibility in the type of work as a consequence of these variations undertaken is required.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Supervise and operate the generating plant to ensure security of supplies..
  2. Prepare generators for operation and undertake shutdown procedures to safeguard the plant and ensure availability.
  3. To assist with both planned and unplanned maintenance activities on the plant and associated equipment.
  4. To undertake standard routine operations and procedures as required to maintain the plant in an operable condition
  5. Assist the Shift Engineer with any aspect of safe plant operation and systems testing.
  6. Be aware of and comply with local legislation, specifically related to Health & Safety, Equal Opportunities and Data Protection.
  7. Such other duties as may be allocated and interchange of duties as required.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

  • The post holder must be a qualified mechanical or electrical craftsman in order to understand the complexities of the various interconnected systems, or equivalent proven experience and an understanding of the complexities of the various interconnected systems
  • In order to be fully effective as a Shift Operator the post holder must acquire knowledge of safe working practices
  • The ability to report faults or abnormalities on the plant
  • Must be certified as ‘Competent Person’ within the Company E&M Safety Rules
